substitute vs. aide reply By Sandy

Yesterday was my first day of subbing- it was a good experience, I have another job for tomorrow! The basic skills teacher in this particular classroom (first grade) normally comes in twice a day to assist and team teach| for math and reading. She clearly took over the reading assignment, which was good and bad in a way. It was good because I was a new sub and it was a relief to sit back for a few minutes and watch another teacher handle this class. On the other hand, it was bad because I'm a newly certified teacher and want as many possible opportunities to teach on my own right now. With this teacher | | taking over for reading, I felt intimidated in a way. I think she caught on because she didn't try to take over the math lesson in the afternoon, she just sat back and watched. However, in your situation, you have your "second teacher" in the room for a reason. It would be difficult to hand all of that over to a sub who might not be properly trained to handle that class on his or her own. So I would suggest that you leave detailed instructions for the sub to team teach with your aide, just as if you were in the classroom. If you have an unplanned absence, you can just get in touch with your aide and give her the team teaching instructions. It will most likely make the sub feel wonderful to have someone in the room who knows the kids, the roles and routines of the classroom! Good luck
