When subbing in a new classroom, I always start out as firm as possible and then lighten up as the day goes on as i get to know the children and they get to know me and my expectations...you can always lighten up but if you| start out not firm enough, you can't go back. Get to know the teachers near by and see if they can give you pointers on who are the biggest behavior problems and what you can do, or what the regular teacher does to solve these problems. Since you're new its even tougher...but once you get familiar with the students and staff you'll know how to handle different situations. Let the | | sub caller know that you have two certifications and you would like to be considered for subbing in the regular elementary classroom as well. Ever since i told my sub caller i didn't mind teaching in the middle school, that's all i've been getting calls for...so i politely said..."i'm mostly interested in elementary level, however, if there is only middle school available then i will sub...i'd rather work then not work" since then she's been mixing it up....
