I've been subbing in Kindergarten for a few days in a row - they love to please, so I agree that praising those that who are following your dierections really does motivate most of the children at this age level to do the same...to get their attention, always speak in a soft voice, even whispering sometimes, but I do not try to talk over them. I wait until I have their atention. They also love it when I sing - I'll just use the tune to an old familiar nursery rhyme, and sing to them what I'd like them to do, or what we are going to do next, rather than talking. They are often mesmerized! Finally, the K's here in FL love criss-cross applesauce, and snip, snap in your lap!
