Hi. I have been teaching special ed. for 7 years. Have you considered utilizing a reward system with these children? I use play "money" to reward my students for completing work and behaving appropriately. On Fridays,| the students choose prizes ranging from $1.00 to $25.00. Also, you could use a sticker chart to reward them. You could start by telling the child that he/she has to fill in one row of the chart to "win" a prize. Then, the child has to fill in the whole chart to earn the prize. Another less time consuming method would be to give out "chance" tickets to all of the students who are working | | well and behaving appropriately. The students place their chance tickets (that they have written their name on) into a bucket. At the end of each day, you draw out one (or more) of the chance ticket(s), and that student or students win a prize or candy that day. On Fridays, you could draw for a "bigger" prize. Also, you may consider other strategies to use in the classroom with those children...do they have difficulty with transitions?...give them plenty of warning...O.K. Cody, in five minutes you will go to _________. etc...do they have difficulty with attention or organization?..Help them with shorter, simpler, one step tasks..organizational folder...etc. I hope that you can use one of the suggestions. I can send more if you need more. Good luck!
