I use the sentence Dan left his pop gun to teach the short vowel sounds which so many many students cannot memorize. I have it posted in large colorful letters on the boards and bookmarks with it on it around the room. They start using it as a guide when they read and also in spelling. I also have made flash cards with the sounds that stump so many ld kids -- example -- ow ar aw au ou tion oi oy ing as a starter. Some of them I have made up gestures for (ow I hit my thumb -- ar touch my arm, etc.) Seems silly but it helps imprint the sound into the student's schemata.
