I am a Resource Room teacher -- 6th grade. One activity that my students really like is a one minute repeated timed reading. They have three chances and then the best score in one minute is recorded. I just pick appropriate
level material, make two copies. One copy is for the student and one is for the teacher. On the teacher's copy number the words on the page -- I just number every 10 wds. Any time they make a mistake they must start at the corrected error and go on. If their best time beats the previous day's reading then they are rewarded with a piece of candy or sticker. When their speed reaches
225 words per minute (and it will!) then material is changed. The kids really enjoy it and if nothing else it gives them confidence and teaches them the words on that page. I also like DISTAR reading program for the type reader you are describing. One other technique I had success with was to take some easy golden books, make flash cards of the words, then the student practices the book until they have it letter perfect. They then "perform" the book, with sound effects, gestures, etc. to another group of students. In our school we have a tmh class that the readers will perform for.
