Literature Idea By Judy

I also teach in a special education classroom - K through 9 cognitive disabilities. Several of my students are lower functioning LD. Here is a literature idea that I did with my students in grades 5-8. I used the book| "Charolette's Web". I got a copy of the book on tape and I was only able to find 4 copies of the book for the students to use to follow along. I then made vocabulary & comprehension worksheets for the students. They would work on the vocabulary worksheets prior to listening to each chapter. Sometimes we would complete the worksheets in class and other times the worksheets were homework |
| assignments. My students loved listening to the story on tape! Great example of oral reading, reading fluency, listening skills & many more. I made a final book test. Students completed a diorama for a scene in the story (makes a nice display for parent/teacher conferences). Finally we watched the movie. Check out the literature links on this web site and you'll find many more activities. Also, most recently my 9th graders did the book "Stone Fox". We followed the same basic ideas, without the tape because I couldn't find one. They want to do another story. You can incorporate some cooking lessons into your unit. For example, Charolette's Web talks about popovers. So we made popovers! Stone Fox talks about potato farming, so we made baked potatoes! It is the extra things that you do for your students that engage them in the learning process. Don't be afraid to experiment with different ideas. Have fun!
