selective mutism resources
By Dr. Chris Stanley

Clip to ScrapBook
You will find a wealth of information at www.selectivemutism.org. It is important to understand that most children with selective mutism exhibit this symptom because of social anxiety...they literally freeze up and are unable
to speak. The responses here are good examples of some misconceptions; for example, punishment (even mild forms as described below) should be avoided. It may cause the child to begin speaking but will only increase anxiety. Children overcome this most successfully when teachers and parents understand that they should reduce anxiety and support attempts at communication, as well
as building self esteem.
You also seem to imply that the parents are not cooperating; please be aware that therapists who understand the proper treatment for selective mutism are exceedingly rare. The parents may well be "looking into" treatment but having difficulty finding a qualified doctor. You might want to check into what resources are available to help them. Your school psychologist may be able to offer some referrals, or if there is a university nearby you can start there. They will need to find a psychologist, psychiatrist or clinical social worker with experience in treating anxiety disorders in children.
Please visit the website referenced above, and encourage the parents to do so as well. Often the key to successful treatment is helping parents and teachers understand selective mutism. Feel free to e-mail me for additional information as well.
