Down Syndrome behavior
By Dave

Clip to ScrapBook
Keep data. What happens just before a problem? What time of day? How long does it last? As a parent of a nine year old boy with DS and as a SPED teacher, I know they depend on routines and structure. If he is in an inclusion
classroom, his work and structure, of course, will need to be modified to meet his developmental level. The consequences to his behavior must be more immediate (both positive and negative) and must be consistent. How would you discipline a three year old for misbehaving? Discipline must be short, must teach new behavior, and will, no doubt, have to be repeated over and over. Sticker
charts with 15 min. intervals, short lessons (a series of short, structured independent and small group lessons that follow a routine), esteem builders (high fives for successful work), high (but reasonable) expectations, and a good sense of humor may help.
