in an effort to answer you

Clip to ScrapBook
Mary B.: In an effort to answer your original question, which I don't believe was ever REALLY answered....may I suggest:
* Ask the resource teacher for direct help, telling her what you are having a problem with specifically
(work on one thing at a time)& ask what she suggests. Don't be too general or vague. Give her info of what you have tried already & how you did it.
*Ask her specifically what she can help you with, what her limitations are, what her availability is. She may have an unbelieveable work load (as others have noted in posts).
*If you feel that you're not getting any response from
her/him, try contacting his/her supervisor/adminstrator, asking THEM exactly what kind of help can you/should you be expecting. If that is not being met, then perhaps you should let them know (diplomatically, of course). Perhaps additional staff should be hired in this field.
*Keep in mind, too, your resource teacher/department may not be well informed themselves on this child's needs & they may be grasping at straws themselves. They may need time to get educated on the subject themselves.
Working with special children is indeed a challenge & sometimes gets to be a touchy subject. I get a lot of "you're lucky" when I say I have only 10 students in my morning class & 10 in my afternoon. But then I get a different reaction when I tell my listener that they are all 5 & under and are classified as "developmentally delayed". And this is my first year teaching!!
Good Luck & hang in there!
