Clip to ScrapBook
Seems like the heirarchy's I've seen in textbooks isn't very clear about using aides and that it is up for interpretation. The district I am in has taken the stand that it is more restrictive to have a 1-to-1 aide than a
self-contained program. In my experience as a special ed teacher, I can tell you that my students who have 1-to-1 aides have an extremely difficult time learning independence skills. Most of the parents I deal with feel self-contained is more restrictive because at least with an aide their child can participate in the general curriculum. In the long run, I have to say I think it is more beneficial
for the child to have indpendence skills than experience in the general curriculum where they don't understand the concepts. I am interested in hearing what others think on this topic from their experiences.
