spelling centers
By jody

Clip to ScrapBook
My class does a word shape activity that can be found in "What The Other Kids Are Doing". They write their spelling words in graph paper using one square for letters like a,c,e...they use two spaces for letters like k,q,t...etc...

We
also do Spelling Cents. I start off with some easy amount of money...like all consonants are worth a penny and all vowels are worth a nickle. Then they write the spelling word and accompanying money addition problem to figure up how much their spelling word is worth. Sometimes they circle the word that is worth the most, least, two that are equal, etc...

Hangman is a

real winner in my room, too. I put review spelling words on index cards. One child draws a card and copies the same number of blanks on the white board. The other 2 or 3 students in the center try to guess one at a time. They also each get a chance writing on the board. I found a really neat plastic Hangman game at the dollar store. When a letter is called and missed the child gets to actually hang up a piece of the skeleton.

Hope these help!
