writing effective endings
By Karen

Clip to ScrapBook
Mary,
My grade 3's were very weak in the endings to their stories. So what I did that helped them and I do this now at least once a weak. I read a good literature picture book to the students. I have them listen to the way the author writes the story, how the character is identified and words used to describe the setting, and the problem. Then before the ending of the story I have them write the ending to the story. Not what they think will happen, but how they would end the story if they were the author. I was pleasantly surprised how well their endings were developed and how they followed the same wording of the author. Once they were successfully in this area with several endings they have an idea to end their stories. I hope this helps.
Karen
