journaling
By john

Clip to ScrapBook
I have journaled several different ways with my third graders. this is probably my most successful year. I do model every step with them about the first five or six times. I suggest doing in many days in a row so it becomes
routine. I do skip a line and mark those lines to be used with an X. The X marks their goal. I am also trying t get a quantity out of them besides just ideas. Some days I give open ended prompts an other days I give specific answer prompts. I use this in all subject areas. In Science the other day- if you were standing on the moon, would the sun appear bigger or smaller than the Earth?
Tell me why you think so. In math, compare and contrast a pictograph and a bar graph. In readng, do you think the main character is similar to you? Why or why not? I only collect a few a day to personally read and respond to. Certain types of journal prompts I will grade and tell them that I will grade it before the assignment. I also tell them what I will be looking for. Focus areas..if you would like more info. I would be happy to share.
