Journaling
By Ramie

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach 3rd grade and we journal daily in different subject areas. The only thing I can suggest is that you model your expectations to them on an overhead or at the board so that they can see exactly what you are saying.
I "talk out" everything I'm doing. This is something I started at the beginning of school. I had to model this way probably 5 or 6 times before everyone was doing it they way that I wanted them to.

We date each journal entry at the top and they do not skip lines. Sometimes we write to a prompt and other times we might explain the steps in a math problem. In math especailly, it

helps me to see their thinking process and correct mistakes. It just depends on the day and what my kids are needing.

I have bunches of math, science and language arts prompts that I would be happy to share with you. If you would like them please let me know.

Stick with the journaling it really helps the kids evaluate their learning and become fluent writers.
