I've been using STW this year and love it! I'm teaching my class to read non-fiction and be able to identify topic and important details. We did the lessons on conventions of non-fiction, 3 stickies to find 3 important ideas, and 2 column notes on topic/details. I don't know how long you've been teaching so if this isn't new to you please don't be offended BUT...model, model, model. I use picture books, chart paper, whole goup, partners, text on transparencies with packets for kids to read along, etc. This is very hard for most 3rd graders but valuable. What a great book! I also use Guiding Readers & Writers and Vicki Spandel's Creating Writers to round out my inspiration for reading and writing.
