some positives

Actually, copying sentences or problems out of a textbook does have some positive attributes: It does teach children to transfer information (as the previous poster mentioned). This is a good precursor for when students
reach a grade level where they may have to copy notes/lectures/ etc. from the board. It also teaches them to copy items accurately-correct positioning of numbers in column addition, subtraction, etc. Sentences from a grammar book serve as good written models of appropriate sentence structure--vivid details, use of nouns, subject-verb agreement. Answering questions from a social studies textbook
helps students to learn how to restate a question and go back to the text to locate information. While it should not be a main method of teaching, consistent, but brief practice, with using textbooks will help children to be more successful as they approach junior high and high school. This is only my opinion, too.
