While I like to get students actively involved in their learning, I do think from time to time it is important to let them work out of a textbook. Transferring information is very difficult (I teach third) and they do need exposure to that. It is not something that I rely on all the time but I do want my students to be prepared for the next grade where they will be expected to do more of it. This is just MY point of view.
