Division: Remedy
By Melisssa

Clip to ScrapBook

Show the students that division is a shorter way of doing repeated subtraction. For 14 divided by 2. Put out 14 cookies and ask how many plates are needed if you place 2 cookies on a plate,----place 2 cookies at a time on each plate, having the children understand that you keep subtracting 2. Your can keep this subtraction record on the board. 14-2=12 12-2=10 etc. Then, you will get the students to see what division is (concept). Let them see how many times you have to subtract 2 until there are no more cookies to place on the plates.

Show that doing this slow subtraction is not necessary because knowing their multiplication facts will teach them their division facts. A division fact is a multiplication fact written backwards.
