third grade readers
By Debra

Clip to ScrapBook
This is my fourth year teaching third grade, and though I don't have all of the answers, I can share what works for me. I have students reading from Preprimer-sixth grade. Our school also has an adopted textbook which leaves
much to be desired. I use it as my foundation for a whole class shared reading and then do my guided reading with other stories or books which may or may not be part of this series. An example: I'm currently teaching Biographies as my theme. I am not mandated to use the stories in order so I have chosen the biography selections in the textbook to guide my class instruction. When I
do my smaller guided reading groups, self-selected reading conferences, and at home reading, I use stories and books that follow the biography theme as well as meet the needs of the individualized reading lessons.I have found it helpful to find a common themeand use the textbook as a "starting" point.
