I agree that they are only 8 yrs old. I can't teach both Sci and SS at the same time. I teach the first half of the year SS and the second half Science. Our SS includes geography and reading maps and communities. This seems age appropriate. The second half of the year they are more capable to take on more abstract thinking for science and the scientific method. Currently I am teaching Systems in the Sky (sun, moon, earth and eventually some discovery of the planets. I also teach Rocks and Minerals and Living Things. Our state just adopted standards-guidelines that was actually helped us focus through all of the texts that we were required to use. good luck
