Managing Behaviors
By Cathy

Clip to ScrapBook
It's true that some classes are more difficult to manage than others. Some of the new teachers in my district have found Fred Jones techniques to be helpful. I believe some of it may be posted on the net. You might try a
reward system that rewards the whole class. For example, they could earn a chip (or whatever) for the behaviors you feel are the most important to target such as interruptions. Every time they all make it through a lesson or transition with no interruptions, they earn a chip. Set a reasonable goal, 10 chips, etc. The reward could be given at the end of the day or end of the week. Remember,
you want them to achieve so keep the goal and time limit attainable. Allow the kids to cheer and celebrate their success each time they earn a chip. Earning something instead of having things taken away will often motivate them to work harder and it sets a more positive tone. The children who conform to your rules will put pressure on the less serious students to do the same. Also, choose rewards with an educational value such as a really neat science experiment, art activity, or whatever you think your kids enjoy. Children also like choices so I often involve them in choosing the reward. My kids like stations. One could be free drawing, working with clay, computers, etc. Be consistent. Good luck! Most of us have been there. Eventually you will find what works for you. Discipline with digniity has gotten me through some challenging classes.
