Anecdotal Records
By Sandra

Clip to ScrapBook
Carrie,
I've just started to take anectodal records and I love what a collection can tell me about a student. My record keeping is done on an Excel spreadsheet. This system works well for me because I have had a lot
of experience working with excel and it's easy to print feedback on an individual student. The spreadsheet is set up like this:
Name Date Comments

Excel lets you sort by name and date so it's easy to see what kind of information you have (or don't have) on a student.

I just began to use a bright orange record sheet to collect information by hand. This has been easy to do during

guided reading or whenever I'm asking students to read aloud. I teach first grade so I use this record keeping for reading almost exclusively. The bright orange sheets help give me access to the information. At the end of the day I collect them and input the information into Excel. I hope this explanation hasn't been too confusing.
