I use a graphic organizer my class calls the umbrella organizer. We draw a big umbrella (you could also make one and copy it). In the umbrella we write our topic. Under the umbrella we write three ideas about our topic. At the bottom where the umbrella handle curls up we write a conclusion. Usually around December we start adding a detail to our each of our three ideas. Then when the students write they sart with the top of the umbrella (topic/main idea) and follow in sequence through the 3 ideas and conclusion. It gives them a formula to organize thoughts and information. My students have to take a county writing test in February which they must pass. The umbrella organizer really helps. I hope it makes sense-it would be easier if I could draw it!
