I also had this problem earlier this year. Through trial and error I finally came up with one that worked for me.The students can earn from 4 to 0 points in these five categories.
Capitals and punctuation
If they used complete sentences
If they stayed on topic and/or followed directions
If they spelled words wall words correctly and their overall spelling
Used neat handwriting
