helping slow readers
By rth

Clip to ScrapBook
I am a teacher in a grade 2 class. My assistant works with my slower readers everyday. She has them read aloud from a book at their guided reading level. (I give her a group of books that are appropriate for these students.)
They usually reread the same book for several days to build fluency and word recognition. She also discusses the story with them, by asking questions such as:

Who are the characters in the story?
What is the story mostly about?
What was the problem in the story?
How did the characters solve the problem?
Tell me about the beginning, the middle and the end of the story.

The

assistants at my school all received training as reading tutors at the beginning of this year. This has helped them to work with our struggling students.
