measurement

Hi,

I teach grade one and I am unsure as to what your curriculum covers, but I am finishing up my unit this week and have some ideas. We uses unifix cubes and links to estimate and guess how tall we are. I have the kids
work in pairs, first they estimate how tall they are then they measure each other. We weigh items like an apple, pencil holder, toy etc, using a weigh scale with two sides. We place the object on one side and screws, washers, nails etc on the other side to see how "heavy" the items are. You can get these at any hardware store. We measured the width of a ball, an apple and our waist using
string and then placed the string down and placed unifix cubes down besied it as a non standard unit of measure ( as we use non standard units in grade one) the same could be done using a ruler. We measured the length of our foot. We explored volume/capacity by guessing which would hold more water, a bowl or a jug and the kids estimated and we measured. They also estimated how many cups of water each might hold. there are many things you can do. I love this unit! It is a lot of fun! Good luck!!
