I agree. Your principal is within his rights to require that videos be closely related to educational goals. I, too, have a stash of videos that correlate to the core. Most school districts or schools have videos in their
media centers that would be appropriate. Here are some good reasons for using videos in your classroom:

Teaching things like alphabet, numbers, or math facts is easier if they are put to music. Videos do that.

Videos allow teachers to actually SHOW students different places and people. They are wonderful supplements to the social studies curriculum. We just watched a video on

the animals of Australia, for example. Most of my students had never seen a koala before.

Videos can reinforce skills learned elsewhere in the classroom. An example would be showing a copy of the show "Between the Lions" which includes simple reading skills. I've already introduced these skills, the video reinforces those lessons in a new and interesting format.

Videos of familiar stories can act like a loving parent who reads the same story over and over. I have a video of some Dr. Suess stories. I read the story once, then play the video for students so they get it again. Those same books then appear in our reading center for students to read on their own.
