teaching alternate methods

I find my kids move away from their fingers when they learn how to use a number line and for bigger numbers, a hundreds chart, as well as learning strategies like counting on. Also second semester or district does (low pressure) timed facts tests so that they have to memorize the facts at home. This does separate the ones who are ready, from the ones who developmentally may not be ready to abandon their fingers!
