We work a lot on math facts strategies. We begin work on counting on up to +3, then we do the double and relate them to real world items (ex: 9+9 is our 18 wheeler fact 6+6 is dozen doughnuts fact etc., doubles +1, adding nine trick (add 10 and take away 1), and "mystery number" ex: 6+8, (double the number in between. We even spend time quizing students on the strategy that can be usedto solve the problem before they give me the answer. Also, here's a modification for Around the World so that more students are engaged: Divide the class into even numbered groups of 6,8 or 10. (I group students with | | similar skills in the math facts together so the competition is more fun) Have 1/2 of each group sit on a chair placed in a row with the other half standing behind one of the chairs. An additional student or adult is the flashcard holder. Taking turns, each sitting student "goes against" the student standing behind their chair. The first to give the correct answer sits. At the end of each round, the students that are standing shift so they stand behind the next chair to the left and the one on the end moves to the other end so they go against someone else. Then another round begins. It gets loud and noisy, but boy is everyone engaged and learning. We only play about 10 minutes.
