Two years ago, after 13 years of teaching kindergarten, I looped with my students to first grade. I loved first grade so much that I decided to stay. You will find that many of your kindergarten ideas and materials are| still appropriate for first grade. Because early-childhood is really a continuum, you will have many firstgraders who are at similar levels to some of your kindergarten children. As a kindergarten teacher, I was concerned to see children going to first grade classes that had them sitting at their desks all day doing paper and pencil work. A child's need for a certain amount of independence, |
| social interaction, and need for hands-on learning experiences does not diminish in grade one. I was able to use my knowledge about developmentally appropriate practices and a learner-centered environment and apply it to first grade. Your kindergarten experience will help you be a really great first grade teacher! Good luck.
