Germs!! By Natalie

Hi, I have an idea on teaching germs. I have done this lesson before and the students love it. Read the story "Germs make me sick" (I cannot rememeber the author's name). You may want to read it over and omit parts| as it is a lengthy story and suited for grade 2/3. After you have read the story tell the class you will be doing an experiment to see how germs make us sick and the importance of washing our hands with soap and water so we can prevent ourselves from getting germs. Divide the class into three groups. Have one group wash their hand with water only. Have the next group wash their hands | | with soap and water. Have the last group not wash their hands. Take three slices of white bread and give one slice to each group to handle (white bread works best as it is easier to see the mold). Place each slice in a separate glass jar that is labeled with the group on it. Tell the students that you will be seeing which jar develops mold first (it should be the jar without clean hands). They will be disgusted and realize the importance of washing our hands before we eat or touch our face. You can extend this into a daily graphing activity by using chart paper and list day 1 etc. with the jar names across the top. I hope this sort of helps and you are able to understand the idea! Have fun!! Natalie
