number line ideas
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
We've just been using a number line to do addition and subtraction. Here are some ideas you might try.

Use a ruler as a number line. This way the students can use their finger to hop along the ruler. Easier than using
a printed line.

Make a number line from masking tape on your classroom floor and have students hop along it to solve problems you pose.

Make up story problems and have the class decide whether they need to hop ahead or hop back to solve them.

Number lines are a great tool for helping young students visualize what they are doing when they add or subtract. I like to give them a variety

of techniques for figuring out answers. Since a number line is posted above our white boare and a hundreds grid is taped into their pencil boxes, using a number line is a great strategy.
