Trade Books
By Cindy

Clip to ScrapBook
I use trade books in my 1st grade classroom to introduce the new phonics lesson, sight words, long vowel pattern, and grammer. The children can use sticky notes or wicky sticks (waxy sticks which will not harm paper and are easily removable) to cover or circle the targeted skill in the book. For example, if we are looking for rhyming words, the students would take turns coming up and placing sticky notes on the words that rhyme. Then those students read the sentence or at least the covered or circled (if using wicky sticks) words. They love to do this and it makes reading more authentic. Big books work best but any size book will do!
