Clip to ScrapBook
I love my homework system because it involves parents, makes the kids feel good, and it works. My students have a notebook we call our homework notebook. EVERY DAY, Mon. - Thurs., we write in our notebook. I write on they
board and they copy. It may look like the following:

1. Spelling
2. Study sight words
3. Chart
4. Read newsletter

1. In our spelling program, we have a little homework each night. If they do it and their parents sign it, they get a "dot" on their hand. This is part of my classroom contract. Everyone does their homework because everyone wants dots.
2. We have 10 sight

words a week, and they are easily learned the first night, but we write it in our notebooks everyday, anyway.
3. We may glue a chart with an exercise that reinforces skills.
4. I send a newsletter home every Monday

Why I do it this way: The children are not punished for not doing homework, because at this age, I do not believe it is totally their responsiblity. The only thing I require is that EVERY night their mom or dad signs the notebook page. This way, I know that mom or dad knows ways they can work with their child if they choose to. If it's a busy night and they can't, then sign the notebook, and it's no big deal. It also build responsibility for the students to get it signed every night, and it provides a viable means of communication between myself and parents.

Hope this helps.
Stefanie
