Pennies
By Jacey

Clip to ScrapBook
Here is the experiment for dirty pennies. I got this from the www.perpetualpreschool. com website. It has some fantastic posts on centers. I never did this activity, so do it at home to make sure it works and how long
it will take. I would not use this for your first lesson. Remember your objective is about pennies as money. Not pennies as friendship... This experiment is just another way you can use pennies. Good luck and let me know how is goes.

Gather a class supply of old, "dirty" pennies, a box of salt, and a bottle of vinegar. Tell the children you need to clean your pennies and sprinkle

some salt over 2 or 3. When nothing happens, pour vinegar over a couple more. Next, mix the salt and vinegar in a pie pan, and add the pennies. Let them help stir. Voila! They will appear noticeably shinier. Talk about how the salt and vinegar worked together and ways we can work together to get things done.
