parent night
By Tia

Clip to ScrapBook
yes, more info is needed.

we also do a back-to-school parent orientation night the 2nd/3rd week of school to go over expectations. for this, i had a powerpoint presentation prepared (with handouts for parents).there were
slides for each subject detailing what students will learn this year. there were slides explain my volunteer policy and our greatest needs, slides on safety procedures, and my "no excuses" policy, basically just everything a parent would need to know, so no one could ever say to me ,"I didn't know." (I also insist all parents come in for this meeting or do a make-up with me--if all
else fails, i squeeze it into conferences first quarter.)

during our open house in the spring, i print MANY digital pictures of the class doing science labs, plays, art. etc.. and post them at the front of the room with captions so parents can see what we have been doing. last year we were in the middle of a multi-curricular unit that involved the aspects of flight. the students had experimented with bernoulli's principal with strips of paper and blowing ping pong balls out of cups--i had all that stuff out for the kids to show their parents--IT WAS A HIT! kids from other classes were even coming in to show their parents. if this is the type of parent night i strongly recommend you have some interactive things out.

if you are doing the RULES type of parent night, i suggest making it clear to parents that you are available--make sure to give them your e-mail address--many parents will email you and this gets rid of those oh, so many phone messages to return. i also share with them that i have an open-door policy and they are welcome in my room any time--i really stress that i'd love them to come in. this makes them relax a bit, knowing that.

good luck
