my little talkers
By Cathy

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm a 2nd grade teacher as well, and they definitely like to talk and have so much to say! I was incredibly frustrated with the talking, voice levels, interrupting...basically "putting out fires" constantly. I have a wonderful
mentor and she said to go back to square one. Teach the behavior I'm expecting. Be very specific: This is what it standing in a line looks like and sounds like (face forward, arms to the sides, mouths closed, straight line). The T-chart works well here as the previous post suggested. After we talked about what "it" looks like and sounds like, we practiced it over and over and
over...If we couldn't get it right, we stopped immediately and practiced it until we got it right. If that meant taking recess time to practice it, that's what we did. It's now November and the growth has been amazing! There are days when we are back at that practice stage again, but they are nowhere near what they were before. I even caught two of them whispering the other day, and they were on-task!! Baby steps.... = )
