Bi-polar By Paula

I teach first grade and have had a mixture of difficult problems this year. One of my students is bi-polar and he does receive a lot of services. His performance will be reviewed again at end of quarter for more services.| So my first thought is to agree that kindergarten students do receive special education services since he had received them last year. This child was in my class with a more difficult student who was extremely ADHD with no medication. With both students I started a home to school notebook to document the days activities. It was very upbeat but also honest. I have found that parents | | are sympathetic because they have the same problems at home. In the case of my ADHD child whose parents were reluctant to give him medication--my notebook was used by the parents when they met with a pediatrician. My notebook only referred to the behaviors I had observed, especially his inability to focus. Consequently, two weeks ago he started taking medicine and it has helped. There are still problems but that goes along with learned behaviors he has picked up over the years.Good luck, I know it's a tough road. But believe in your parents--I'm convinced that all parents want school to work out for their children.
