I totally understand what you are saying. My third graders at the beginning of the year couldn't even find the directions on any of their worksheets. I counted one day and I had to tell them their directions for one activity SEVEN times!

However! They have come so far. I go over the directions one time and that is it. We have procedures for instructions -- they are not to move while I am instructing or giving directions -- that has helped alot.

They were so afraid when they started third grade, now they have gotten used to what we do, so I am stepping up the work load...

Regarding leaving -- stick it out, you may feel differently in a couple of months. One year of development and who knows? You may only be reading those directions 5 times!
