Hi Sara,
While I can commiserate with you, you do have choices...just the nomination of Teacher of the Year is an honor. Why not say no?
I do have a concern regarding your choice of descriptors-labeling your children
as 'lazy'. Probably the most important thing I hope my undergrad ed students take away from my classes is the realization that nearly everything that happens in your classroom a reflection of YOU. When children don't make good choices regarding their learning, you need to look at the assignment, why they're not engaged, the choices (or lack thereof) you've given, and the relevance
to their lives. Try reading the work of Brian Cambourne, Frank Smith, Alfie Kohn for starters. And yes, I do know this is a VENT board, and you're stressed and tired, but they're children.
;-}
