I do handwriting practice every morning until the announcements come on. They only have to do about 4 lines or so. For those that are finished early, there are always books to hand back or pencils to sharpn. This is for a gr.3 class and I'm not sure what grade you have. It only takes about 10 minutes or so and then I get a few student to "mark" and hand back the books. If the work is neat, they get a little sticker in their books. It's good for the messier writers to see what nice writiing looks like. Last year I tried a morning math challenge that they worked out on a scrap piece of paper then put in an envelope. I drew a random one out of the envelope and if the challenge was solved successfully they recieved a little prize. Hope this helps.
