Tips for newbies... By Jessie

I was am a first year teacher in a regular elementary room setting (5th grade). This year has been quite the learning experience.A few things I wish someone would have told me are the following: Important Dates: for | things like state testing, music concerts, and such and what my role in such events are expected. I just found out that Tues. I will be accompanying my kids to a music contest to be the one and only chaparoen (sp, I know...but its been a long week!) I only found out by accident that I have to be there at 7 AM to leave on the bus! It stinks not being prepared for such things... Be Prepared | | to defend pretty much EVERYTHING you do as a first year teacher, is something else I wish I'd been told. Its not that my principal is overbearing or a brute, quite the contrary, but it seems everything from my discipline plan (which I have had great reviews about from the admin and parents alike, but its a little different then most around these parts so it got questioned quite a bit in the begining) to certain lesson plans were questioned. Its not a bad thing...just takes some getting used to. Its like you come in with all these fresh ideas and if you've gotten a job with co-workers that have been there a long time, your ideas tend to get questioned. No matter what tips you find here, be prepared to know that not everything will get covered...there is so much to learn, but YOU CAN DO IT, and YOU WILL DO GREAT! Just like me, soon you won't be the "newbie" anymore...and I know you'll love teaching!
