My thoughts
By Fed Up (Liz)

Clip to ScrapBook
Actually, all of the parents I have talked to have been very supportive about my choice to have fun friday in my classroom. Recess does not "accomplish anything in the curriculum or designed around academics", either, but
it is a part of most schools because most people realize that kids need a chance to play and have free time. Unfortunately, my school feels it is "unsafe" for students to have recess because of the area we are in, so I have chose to use fun friday as an alternative to recess, and have found it to be a very positive experience for the majority of my kids.

Also, I am glad that the situation

you had with the boy stealing worked out so well for you, but unfortunately that is not an option for me. We only have one couselor for approximately 600 students. Yes, I have sent students to her (the girl in my class whose brother tried to kill her, the boy in my class who was being sexually abuse by his father...) but she is far too busy for me to be sending students to her whenever someone misbehaves.

I appreciate your suggestion about doing research. I applaud you for taking the inititive in learning as much as you can about the field of education. I, too, have spent many hours in the library and online researching as much as I possibly can. Actually, the classroom management plan I have designed has been based on the research I have studied. Based upon my research and my own experience, I find it extremely unlikely that there is a way to run a classroom without ANY form of punishment (as you seem to have concluded) and you have done little to prove to me otherwise.

I wonder if in your research you ever studied how overwhelmed new teachers are and how greatly they need support from their collegues. I found it very sad that you chose to critize me (even about my "word choice") than to offer me any sort of support, suggestions or words of encouragement. After reading the other posts (even though YOU thought they were negative) I felt supported and encouraged. After reading your posts, I felt quite the opposite. I am sincerely hoping this was not your intent.
