As a parent, I would complain about your Fun Friday. It does not seem to be accomplishing anything in the curriculum and does not seem to be designed around academics in any way. Maybe you have not had any complaints -
but I am letting you know I would be complaining if my child were in such a situation.

I thought of something else to share with you. One year I had a child steal money from my desk. This child was not "punished" and he was not suspended. Instead, he went and met with the counselor. They set up some kind of plan and they met on a regular basis throughout the entire year (the stealing

incident happened during the first month of school). This turned out to be very beneficial for the child - probably more so than suspension or removal from recess or any other "fun" activity.

Do I have suggestions about management? Yes. I also have suggestions about your choice of words.

You have labeled your students at-risk. This is a very popular term that many people use and one that I disagree with. Think about what you associate with that term. What are your expectations of children who come with that label versus kids who do not come with it? What positive things are achieved by using this label? This is an area I am currently looking into.

For management/discipline help I would go to the ERIC web site and do a search for research articles relating to your question. Then I would go to the local univesity library, copy the articles, and read them. This is something I do myself every summer and across the year on a particular topic of interest to me. Starting this summer I will be exploring labels and what it means to label students. I am not suggesting things I would not do myself.
