why I teach
By Jessica

Clip to ScrapBook
I began teaching, because my husband thought that our own children would benefit from a mother who worked, but who would also be available when the children got home from school and school vacation times. I got my teaching
certificate, went to school at night while he babysat, and when my younger son was 4, I got my first teaching position. As my kids grew older and attended school themselves, my schedule coincided with theirs, so I didn't need to worry about babysitting or child care.

My "babies" are now 20 and 22. I continue to teach, but for a different reason. One reason I like teaching is the

opportunity to be in a challenging professional position. I do believe that teachers receive respect and admiration from most people. My job is challenging, and it changes every year with new students, so I am never bored. If I ever tire of teaching fourth grade, I could switch to another grade level and begin with a brand-new challenge. I find it hard to imagine doing the same job for 25 years, but it's not at all hard to imagine teaching that long. It IS a very tiring and stressful job, though!
