same issues LONG-SORRY

Clip to ScrapBook
It really saddens me that some of the posters knocked you down when you're already feeling so much discomfort. Because I have been exactly where you are, and have experienced everything except the phone calls I understand
how those things occurred. I taught 7th grade at risk inner city kids. I thought I had my management down, but other teachers said they were just a rough group. My principal spoke to me quite critically about my classroom management and I almost gave up, but kept practicing until things seemed to improve. I observed a few other teachers and implemented some of their strategies. One
that helped me was to basically "POLICE" the room as my students worked. Nothing on their desks but paper pencils books, or any work for the day. If anyone tried to move out their seats or become talkative or disruptive in any way I would state loudly and firmly "There is no talking. Stay on task." It worked, but was quite draining. I could not do exciting lesson plans because they became too overstimulated. I look back upon last year as my own inner personal battle that had to be conquered if I would be able to teach again.

This is my second year with the same type of kids but a lower grade (6th). I have some major issues to still work on, but each experience is bringing me closer to finding what works the best for me. I have had very good observation reports so far. I am able to teach more than last year, but some students seem to never conform to the rules, do their homework, or care about their grades. It will get easier. Now I truly understand what my mentor said last year:
The first year--you are too lenient
The second year--too strict
By the third year you are finally feeling a little more comfortable.
But it is in the fifth year that you know what works and what your strengths are as teacher. Can't wait to be there!!!!
