Also, it sounds like you have a principal/administration like so many, which is not conducive to enforcing behavior. You said referrals just get warnings. This is a big problem because sometimes you have to give referrals,
and if nothing happens, then that referral is not a big threat. I find that there are just some kids who need to be turned over to a higher authority. I have kids who get their names on the board and are given things like detention, standards, dictionary words, reflections ("think sheets") ... but they refuse to complete these things or turn them in. The principal does not support
a more severe consequence for not completing these other consequences, so what's the point?

I'm sorry, I know that we new people don't do a terrific job of everything, but this issue is one of my major problems with the whole profession. If we're going to get bettter, we need support.
