I still think By Julianne

that you should reward the ones that are making the effort. In my first grade room it has worked well to just walk around as the kids work and plunk down a sticker on the desk of students who are working quietly. The immediate| effect is that other students figure out (really really fast) why you are giving stickers, or m&m's or school money, and start doing what they're supposed to do. Now whether this would work with older students, I don't know. My friend at the middle school says you can get kids to do anything for a Jolly Rancher (candy - I don't know how universal Jolly Ranchers are) Another way |
| to do this is to keep track of the kids who are really following your classroom rules and save their reward until the beginning of the next day. As you start the day just mention that the following students earned a reward for their good behavior yesterday. Anyone wanting a reward tomorrow should keep that in mind.
