If they continually don't bring supplies to class (and since you are a middle school teacher) assign the student detention if your school uses this as a consequence or some kind of in-house program after so many offenses. Otherwise (and I may be a hardass for this) I would deduct from their grade (like previously mentioned) or give them the zero. Sure, the parents are going to complain, but they aren't helping the problem any! It's a matter of when do the kids get taught responsibility? I teach 4th grade and it's a year-to-year thing. Some years are better than otehrs, but someone is always making excuses for these kids. When is enough enough?
